Is a marriage possible?
A woman has been living with her boyfriend for five years. Both had been divorced and in the beginning both agreed they did not want to get married. However, the woman has since changed her mind. They are very committed to each other, but the man has been divorced twice and is afraid to get married again. This relationship could become a marriage, but the past experiences need to be addressed. Both parties need to work on it in order to be sure past mistakes are not repeated.
Can expectations in a relationship change?
It doesn’t matter that the woman was not clear about wanting to get married in the beginning. Everybody changes over a period of five years; that is normal behavior. Just because your expectations were different in the beginning does not mean it’s not okay for them to change.
Go after your dreams
You can’t let yourself be afraid of a possible change, but it is going to be hard. It will take a lot of conversations, and there is always the risk he will choose to live alone. Believe that you deserve your dream and go for it, even if it means starting over. If he has invested a lot in the relationship, there is a good chance he doesn’t want to lose it either.
First of all, it is okay for your expectations to change in a relationship. Everybody changes over time and this is perfectly acceptable behavior. If you want your dream to be realized you are going to have to talk to your partner about it. Your past experiences need to be addressed and you will need to work on it together. Fear should not hold you back. While bringing up the fact that you want to see your relationship change will be taking a risk, in the end it is the only way to get what you really want. You need to really believe that you deserve your dream. It may mean starting all over, but in the end you will have what you want.
